BIX MEDARD Bio 2010.

Influencé par Björk, Coco Rosie et Serge Gainsbourg, Bix Medard joue sur de nouvelles cordes de la chanson française, teintées de couleur electro-gothique, de style down-beat.
 
Cela a débuté dans les premiers mois de 2008: La marque de design Y-dress (Bruxelles) demande à Peter Clasen (leader du groupe électronique Neven) et à Bix de jouer dans un de ses défilés de mode, et ainsi commencent-ils à créer leurs propres morceaux. Tous les deux sont issus du monde des arts plastiques et graphiques, et la musique est leur trait d’union.

Après le Japon, la Hongrie, la France et la Norvège, Bix - peintre, musicienne de jazz/rock et artiste de performance - réside actuellement à Bruxelles où elle écrit des textes minimalistes inspirés de surréalisme, dépouillés et simples, pris dans le langage parlé quotidien, qui reflètent la pluralité culturelle de la société actuelle et son influence sur ce que vit et pense l’individu, intérieurement.
L’interprétation vocale prend appui sur des sonorités se trouvant dans d’autres langues pour exprimer autour du français la mixité des cultures de la société actuelle, tout en gardant la spécificité de son enfance parisienne et de sa vie actuelle bruxelloise.

Le CD "Bix Medard" sort début 2009 chez Altaïr Musik, label fondé par le groupe électropop Monsieur Smits. Le CD connait beaucoup de passages radio sur les ondes des 'College Radios aux Etats Unis et fin avril le CD monte jusque 34 dans le charts CMJ (liste des disques populaires des radios universitaires américaines).

Après une série de concerts en Belgique, ou Bix Medard expérimente avec plusieurs formules, tantôt avec danseuse, tantôt avec percussioniste, tantôt avec installation video, Bix Medard reçoit une invitation d'aller faire une série de concerts au Japon en novembre 2009. Les concerts se font en collaboration avec Y-dress?.

Bix Medard et Y-dress? décident de produire ensemble un CD.

Les 15 chansons composées et présentées sur ce CD "Bix Medard - Y-dress?" qui sort début 2010 (Altaïr Musik / distribution Bang!/Pias)peuvent être qualifiées de pop aux accents psychédéliques, minimalistes, new-wave, post-punk, gothique, trip-hop et down-beat : kitsch mais jamais ridicule.
Un zeste de rétro, des échos psychédéliques des années 60, un synthétiseur mono années 70, rythmique et effets vocaux des années 80 : sur des couches différentes de sons électroniques, se mêlent la voix, la flûte et la basse qui restent fondamentalement organiques.

Bix Medard  (Altaïr Musik)
Bix et Peter Clasen sont deux artistes atypiques qui ont uni leurs talents pour former Bix Medard, un groupe que l'on n'est pas prêt d'oublier. Surfant sur ce que l'on appelle généralement la nouvelle musique française, le duo explore une pop minimaliste et légèrement gothique comme si Bjork, Serge Gainsbourg et Coco Rosie s'étaient donné rendez-vous dans leur studio. Un album étrange et exotique qui présente en 14 pièces un univers riche en sonorités et mélodies sucrées. Pas de doute, la voix mielleuse de Bix n'est pas innocente sur des textes comme "Le saut", "J'ai deux amours" la reprise de Josephine Baker, "C'est si bon", "G2" et "L'homme blessé". Entre poésie, ambiance de conte de fée et surréalisme affiché, ils vivent à Bruxelles, Bix Medard donne des ailes et un certain frisson à la musique d'aujourd'hui qu'elle soit française, nouvelle ou pas. Un premier essai osé et novateur pour un style qui on l'espère saura évoluer sur le second opus que l'on attend impatiemment. Séduisant, tout ça!!!

Les dissonances de Bix Medard.
Bix Medard est le fruit de la collaboration entre le bassiste Peter Clasen et la chanteuse et flûtiste Bix.
Cela donne un album au son électro down-tempo, où les dissonances sont légion. La basse de Peter Clasen puise dans la new wave des années 80, tandis que le chant de Bix est inspiré de Bjork, voire de Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Cela surprend à la première écoute. Parmi les 14 titres, deux reprises minimalistes :
J’ai deux amours, immortalisée par Joséphine Baker, et C’est si bon, popularisée par Eartha Kitt et Louis Armstrong.

Sonicbids Spotlight: Bix Medard

Francophiles be prepared to swoon! This week the spotlight is on Brussels-based band Bix Medard. On their latest album, La Nouvelle Chanson Française (Altaïr), the soft, airy vocals and flute-playing of Bix mix with the down-tempo electronic, new wave beats of Peter Clasen. The songs, sung entirely in French, have already made Bix Medard a CMJ fan-favorite. The duo climbed their way up to number 32 on the charts this past April. A sophomore release, a collection of both new tracks and Chanson remixes, is already in the works in collaboration with the Belgian fashion house Y-dress?. The album is scheduled for a Tokyo premiere this November.

I was a personally little skeptical before listening to tracks from Bix Medard's self-titled debut CD. After all, Bix and bandmate Peter Clasen are both based in Brussels, Belgium at the moment and I was certain that she would be singing in a language other than English. Nevertheless, I cued up Bix's tracks in my mp3 player and got ready to take a listen, all the while thinking I was just going to have to just soldier through it--but from the first notes of "C'est Si Bon" she had me. As I listened to her sultry yet somewhat airy voice juxtaposed against groovy bass lines and trippy monophonic synths, I just couldn't help myself. Almost instantly, I began humming and bopping along with the melodies. I didn't care that she was singing in French (at least, I think it was French), to be honest, I hardly even noticed. What I did take notice of was that Bix and Peter’s music is well arranged, well played and has a resonance that transcends the language barrier. Enjoy!  CC

Bix Medard – Bix Medard (independent release)

Sometimes, the darkest place we know lies deep beneath the shiny glowing surface of our perfect pop heart.

The two cover songs in this otherwise wonderfully ‘all originals’ set are a take on the fragile tragic beauty and strength of a Josephine Baker standard, and a cute mischievous capture of a song that enigma and crazy 50s kitten Eartha Kitt brought to the worlds attention.

The drama starts straight away, barely there waves of piano, bass and a skittering scary percussion slide up against the sweet breathy vocalizing and then flute, just escaping from an ancient movie, and then,

the shadows take over.

And how those shadows dance.

These rhythms, these candleFlicker ghosts disturb and seduce, songs of fluid dangerous hours with a partner you are not quite sure of, but very much want to spend the evening with.

This danger is addictive.

Not since Keren Ann’s No-Lita have I been so quietly and completely captured.
